Course Description

The course begins in front of the Guam Visitors Bureau, near the Gov. Joseph Flores Memorial Park at Ypao Beach, Tumon with a hill climb and rolling slopes for the first two kilometers. The next two kilometers are relatively flat as the course winds through the residential village of Tamuning and along the west coast main thoroughfare, Marine Corps Drive, into the capital city of Hagåtña. The turnaround points for both the Ekiden relay and the half-marathon are in the village of Asan. The final leg of the course features hill climbs and a downhill slope toward the Finish Line at the Memorial Park at Ypao. The entire course is scenic and tranquil with sunrise ocean views and light, cool breezes.

Registration ends 10/7. There will be no race day registrations accepted - NO EXCEPTIONS! Entry fee is nontransferable and nonrefundable


Race Packets

Race packets will be available for pick up on Thursday, October 13, from 3 pm to 7pm, October 14, from 2pm to 7pm at the main pavilion at Gov. Joseph Flores Memorial Park at Ypao Beach. Please present a photocopy of the confirmation email you received upon completion of your entry registration. Final race packet pick up is Saturday, October 15, from 11 am to 3 pm, at the Guam Micronesia Island Fair. ALL RACE PACKETS MUST BE PICKED UP NO LATER THAN 7 PM OCTOBER 15, 2011. RACE NUMBERS AND TIMING DEVICES WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE ON RACE DAY. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Each packet will contain race bib, event t-shirt, race information sheet and timing device.


Aid Stations

Water will be available at the Start and Finish lines. The first Aid /Hydration Station is approximately 1.5 km from the start. Subsequent aid stations will follow at intervals of one to two kilometers. There will be a total of eight aid stations on the course, where water and electrolyte-enhanced sports beverages will be served, and First Aid and restrooms available.


Weather Conditions

Precautions should be taken against heat and humidity. Proper hydration and nutrition prior to the race is extremely important as the temperatures in Guam will likely be in the high 80s with humidity in the 80 to high 90 percent range. A long distance event with these conditions can be dangerous for those who are insufficiently prepared. If this is your first time participating in a running event of this length in a warm and humid climate, take fluids at each aid station.


Transportation Of Ekiden Relay Runners

Ekiden relay runners for legs 2 through 4 will be transported to their respective exchange points starting at 4:30 a.m. on race morning from Gov. Joseph Flores Memorial Park, Ypao Beach south side parking area (closest to Hilton). Buses will be clearly marked with the exchange points they are destined for. Return shuttle service will begin at 5:30 a.m. for runners who have completed their exchange. Please see transportation schedule below.

Destination Departure Time

  • Exchange 1 – 4:30 a.m.
  • Exchange 2 - 4:40 a.m.
  • Exchange 3 - 5:10 a.m.
  • Return to Ypao - 5:30 a.m. to 6:10 a.m.

Race Turnaround and Completion

All runners must reach the turnaround point in no more than two hours and must complete the race within four hours. The race course will be opened to vehicular traffic promptly at 9:00 a.m. Runners unable meet the time requirement will not be allowed to complete the race.


Additional Information

The awards ceremony will take place at Gov. Joseph Flores Memorial Park, Ypao Beach, Tumon immediately following the event (approximately 7:30 a.m.) with trophies awarded to the top overall male, female and relay team. Medals will be awarded three-deep in each individual and relay division. The top international male and female finishers will receive roundtrip air transportation via Continental Airlines to return to the 2012 Guam Ko’ko’ Road Race. If the winner is a local resident, he or she will receive roundtrip air transportation to a Continental Airlines destination. All air travel prizes are courtesy of Continental Airlines.
